Small houses are often masked by the theme of having every room completely separate from the other and in many cases there are more doorways than windows. To make a small home feel bigger you should try to open up as many small areas as possible to give the
look and feel of a larger space. This can be done in a variety of different ways including opening up walls, enlarging door and entryways, or using more windows. If you have a home that has a small room with a particularly nice view of landscaping outside then this is a great room to make bigger by adding more windows. The bigger the widows the better because they will make the transition from the small room to the outdoor space seem flawless thus giving the feel of a larger space.
Making a Small House Feel Bigger: Colors play a key role in the way a home looks and feels. While you should not be afraid to use color in the home you should pay close attention to detail when it comes to the way the colors in your home can make it seem larger or smaller than it actually is.
For instance, light colors give a small room a larger feel while darker colors tend to make a room seem smaller than it actually is. If you really like the dark colors then a good way to incorporate them into the home is either through accents or by using the darker tone on the lower portion of a wall with a lighter upper portion. This effect will make the ceilings in the room seem higher thus giving a larger appeal to the small home.
Use every inch of space wisely in the home to get the most out of the square footage. Try combining spaces into dual purpose rooms such as a den and an office together or a spare bedroom that plays a dual role as an office.
You can also create an eating area in the kitchen that will be used regularly and use the formal dining room as an office or as a child's playroom. Often times the formal dining room is located directly off of the formal living room so to create these two spaces into a space that is actually used such as a play room and an office will make the home more easy to navigate and use.
Making a Small House Bigger: Remove the clutter from every room of the home to create a space that seems bigger and to make room for new items. Many of us tend to keep items that we will never use again or may not even know that we have.
Begin in one room and work your way across the house to remove unwanted or unnecessary items from each room. A great place to start is closets and children's rooms as these two zones tend to become the most cluttered with items that are completely unnecessary.
