Although Memorial Day has always been looked upon as the unofficial start of summer, nobody waits until that weekend to get out their grills and patio furniture; and some people don’t even wait for the month of May. As soon as the temperature gets into the 40’s, they’re cooking out on their porches and patios, even if it’s still too cold to eat outside.Every year, more people buy grills, and every year, the grills get fancier and have new features. The problem is that some amateur outdoor chefs think that the more the grill does, the less they have to know about cooking. In fact, many people think that all they have to do is to get the grill hot and throw some meat onto it; but it truly takes some know-how to produce a succulent steak or chicken breast.
Even a simple hamburger can be ruined by someone who is inexperienced with outdoor cooking.To begin with, you must become familiar with your grill and the functions of all of its knobs and gauges. Even if you have done a lot of outdoor cooking, this is a critical step when you get a new grill. It’s also important to equip yourself with all of the necessary utensils. Make sure that you have a set of tongs, a fork, and a spatula, all with long handles, so that you don’t risk getting too close to the flames. You should also have flame-retardant barbecue mitts that go halfway up your forearm. An apron will keep grease from splattering onto your clothes, but make sure that it’s tied securely so that it doesn’t get into the fire, even though it, too, should be resistant to fire. If you’re not using an apron, don’t wear loose clothing while you’re cooking.Pre-heating the grill makes a big difference to the quality and taste of your food as well – and it has to be extremely hot. To get the best results, cook at around 500º Fahrenheit. If you have a gas grill, it will probably take between ten and fifteen minutes to reach that temperature, while charcoal grills may take up to a half-hour. When they’re hot enough, the coals will be covered with a layer of gray ash. Another way to tell when your grill is ready is to hold your hand about twelve inches above it; if you can keep it there for more than a second or two, the grill hasn’t reached 500º yet.This will give you a good idea of where to start; we will be discussing more grilling and barbecuing tips in future articles.
